If you’re a writer of science fiction or fantasy, you’ve probably heard of the Writers of the Future contest. If not, Writers of the Future is a quarterly contest that was established in 1983 by L. Ron Hubbard. It’s purpose is to discover new amateur and aspiring writers of science fiction and fantasy. Writers submit short stories or novelettes every three months. They are then judged by professional writers like Gene Wolfe, Anne McCaffrey, Larry Niven, Brian Herbert, etc., who choose three exceptional writers to receive a monetary award. At the end of the year, the top writers compete for $5,000 and everyone’s pieces are published in a book.

A companion contest is ran at the same time – Illustrators of the Future. As you may ascertain from the name, this contest is intended to discover and draw attention to new illustrators so that they may get their foot in the door of the publishing industry. The winners’ illustrations are included in the Writers of the Future book.

I’ve bought a few of the Writers of the Future books and have thoroughly enjoyed them. The illustrations are moving, the stories inspiring…really something to look into! This year, Galaxy Press has sent me an advanced reader’s copy, so keep an eye out for a review coming in the near future.

For right now, Galaxy Press invites you to view the Writers of the Future awards ceremony on April 13th. They will be LIVE streaming the event on their website www.WritersoftheFuture.com at 9:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. PST. Orson Scott Card will be attending and receiving an award.
